Some places you go. Some places stay within you long after you have returned. One of them is Memepokhari of Lamjung.
Memepokhari, situated above 4,400 meters, beneath the dramatic Himalayan ranges of Himchuli and Manaslu, is not just another tick on a trekking map. “The journey is part of the experience.” The terrain is constantly changing, the trail requires patience and each ascent offers a unique landscape, from village lanes and forested tracks to rugged high-altitude terrain. The trek is physically demanding but that is exactly what makes it a lifetime experience.
Memepokhari is also of deep spiritual value to the local Gurung and Tamang communities. On Janai Purnima, pilgrims walk through this challenging terrain to pay their homage to their deity. Faith, culture and mountains come together here in a way that can’t be understood just with photographs.
My trip to Memepokhari made me realize that traveling in the mountains is not always comfortable. I even got a fever twice after coming back from the trek. The physical toll is immense but the memories of the trail, the terrain, the people and the immense silence of the Himalayas are much more powerful than the discomfort.
If you want to experience a different side of Nepal, Memepokhari is not to be missed. It’s a journey where the destination is important but so is the journey to get there.
Memepokhari is not only a trek. It is terrain, faith, community, and endurance woven into a single Himalayan experience.
